A senior citizen, who was deprived of gold medal at a marathon due to wrong claim by an underage contestant, finally got justice after a year.Ropar Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajiv Kumar Gupta had declared BS Saini winner at a marathon held on October 31, 2017. Saini said the administration had organised a marathon for senior citizens on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. “Surjeet Singh Barnala was declared the winner, while I was adjudged the first runner-up,” he said, adding that he challenged the decision claiming that Barnala was below 60 years of age.
He said at that time the district sport authorities assured him of taking appropriate action, but nothing was done following which he lodged a complaint with the DC on November 11, 2017.After not getting reply, he filed another application under the RTI Act. Next month on February 19, 2018, he filed an appeal in this regard which was disposed of by the then Additional Deputy Commissioner Lakhmir Singh declaring Barnala’s age as 58 years.
