Niroshan Dickwella played the shot of the match on the opening day of the first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane. The left-hander left the audience stunned with his remarkable shot against Mitchell Starc as he pulled off a perfect dil-scoop. What made it more special was the shot came at a time when Sri Lanka were struggling out in the middle with seven down on 102 runs.

Dickwella took on Starc en-route his 78-ball 64 and played a brilliant scoop shot behind the stumps for a six. The remarkable shot left everyone in the crowd amazed as the left-hander gave everyone something to cheer in an otherwise lacklustre show from the Sri Lankan batsmen. The visitors were bundled out for a dismal 144 as Pat Cummins went on to pick a 4-wicket haul.

Dickwella was the lone fighter in the Sri Lankan batting line-up as he tried his best to rescue the visitors after the top-order collapsed failing to deliver. Openers Dimuth Karunaratne (24) and Lahiru Thirimanne (12) got off to a poor start and failed to find any support from the likes of Dinesh Chandimal (5) and Kusal Mendis (14). Cummins combined with Jhye Richardson to run through the Sri Lankan top-order restricting them on a low-key total.

While Cummins finished as Australia's best bowler with figures of 39/4 in his 14.4 overs, Richardson picked up three wickets in 14 overs conceding just 26 runs. The pace duo combined well to derail Sri Lanka's misfiring batting line-up. In reply, Australia managed to post 72 runs on the board in 25 overs before stumps on Day 1 at the Gabba.

Opener Marcus Harris (40) remained unbeaten on the crease with Nathan Lyon (0). Lyon was sent to bat up the order to survive the remaining few 2.5 overs after the dismissal of Usman Khawaja (11) in the 23rd over of the Australian innings.
