The 40-year-old quarterback has announced he will returning next season.

Brees insisted the 26-23 overtime loss on Sunday to the Los Angeles Rams hasn’t stopped his plans to return in 2019.

"I plan on being here next year and making another run at it," he said.

Brees has been playing in the NFL for 18 seasons and finished this year with a personal best passer rating for 115.7.

He also completed an impressive 74.4 percent of his passes.

Speaking to ESPN’s Miek Triplett after the Championship loss, he said: "My mind's not even there right now. So this is all pretty fresh.

“But I’m just going to take a few days to kind of let it all settle in, talk with my teammates and my coaches.

Sunday’s game was marred by controversy over the decision of the officials to not call pass interference late in the game.

It was the fourth quarter with 1:49 left on the clock and the Saints were in possession of the ball on a 3rd and 10.

Brees dropped back and targeted an open Tommylee Lewis on the sideline at the 5 yard line.

As Lewis made a move to catch the ball, Rams corner Nickell Robey-Coleman smashed into the Saints receiver before to the ball got to him - no flags were thrown by the officials and the home crowd showed their disapproval.

Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein sealed the victory for Los Angeles with a 57-yard field goal in overtime to send them onto Atlanta and the Super Bowl.

Saints head coach Sean Payton wasn’t happy with the referees after the game and voiced his anger over the officiating, or lack of.

“I don’t know if there was ever a more obvious pass interference,” he said.

“It’s a tough way to lose a game.

“Especially when you’re in a position to win it.

“It’s all the more reason why we need more replays.”

As for Brees, who has one year left on the two-year contract with the Saints, he hopes to use this last game as motivation for next season.

"Listen, it has to drive you," Brees said.

"Obviously it stings right now, and it will probably for a while.

“But as we look back on the 2018 New Orleans Saints, man, this was a special team and this was a special year."
