Indian Women's team kicked off their limited-overs series against New Zealand Women on a positive note as they defeated the hosts by nine wickets in the first ODI at the McLean Park in Napier on Thursday. Smriti Mandhana scored a fantastic century as she along with fellow opener Jemimah Rodrigues took the Women in Blue over the winning line with ease. After her brilliant knock of 105 runs in 104 balls, Mandhana said she is glad that she didn’t get out in the 70s and 80s and added that she was talking to herself throughout her knock and kept on telling herself to not play any rash shot.

"I have a thing of getting out in the 70s and 80s, so I had to talk to myself, 'don't hit any rash shots, don't hit any lofted shots, just play in singles and doubles'. I'm really happy with that aspect," said Mandhana after the win.

"I was able to stick in and guide the team through. Again, if I'd scored three runs I would have been a lot happier," she added.

New Zealand were bundled out for 192 as Poonam Yadav and Ekta Bisht wreaked havoc with the ball by taking three wickets each.

New Zealand were 192 all out with spinners Ekta Bisht and Poonam Yadav, taking three wickets apiece. Team India chased the target in just 33 overs with Jemimah and Mandhana scoring all the runs within themselves. Mandhana after her knock said that the team had watched the men’s team play a bit as they had no clue on what the conditions would offer in New Zealand.

"Initially we just played according to the merit of the ball. We just had to react to the ball, because they had good pacers. The plan was to see how the new ball was doing,” said Mandhana.

"This was the first time we were batting in New Zealand, and we didn't really know. We watched a bit of the men's match and also how the first innings went. So we decided to just keep it simple, play according to the merit of the ball," Mandhana added.

India Women will next take on New Zealand Women in the second ODI at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on January 29.
